I tried to post my blog on Friday, but I've been having some trouble with my computer. I'm giving it a try on my iPhone. Cross your fingers! Coach D did an amazing job organizing our "Jump for Heart" event. We have been practicing our jumping skills for the past few weeks and on Friday the children did different jumping activities for 30 minutes. It was a ton of fun and for a GREAT cause! Thanks for all of the donations to the Heart Foundation. (Okay, this is driving me CRAZY!! Last week the video was sideways, this week they are completely upside down!!! Hopefully, you're viewing this on a tablet or phone so you can just turn it around. I'll try to get to the bottom of this. Sorry for the inconvenience!) In science, we have been studying about the 3 types of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. On Wednesday, we had a liquid race to see which liquid would flow the fastest. Our predictions were wrong, with ketchup jumping ahead first. We discussed that the mass in a liquid must influence how quickly it moves. Try it at home! HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING NEXT...

Not only are we in a new year, we have also been blessed with the cold and flu season! Sniffles and coughs have been a common occurrence this week at school, for me as well! Please donate more Kleenex. Our supply has run low!! Thanks, in advance. ![]() We have been working on reading "ed" endings. The kids are learning that words that end in "ed" can sound like a /d/, /t/, or /id/. After a group lesson sorting words into the appropriate columns, the kids had a chance to do the same activity on their own. The kids are learning about contractions and some different types of homophones. As a class, we create charts to post in the classroom so the children can refer to them as they read and write. The walls become like a second teacher in the room. (Sorry about the video- I can't seem to rotate it. I thought you'd like to see it) Make sure to stop by the office to see the awesome portraits the kids did of Martin Luther King Jr. They should be up for the next few weeks! ![]() In music class, Mr. Perez continues to work with the first graders on singing and reading notes. A FEW EXTRA THINGS...
**The Jump-a-Thon will be next Friday (1/30). First grade will be jumping from 8:10 - 8:40 in the morning. ** Thanks for the field trip donations! Permission slips will go home in March for our field trip on April 21st. ![]() We have spent the last few weeks learning a great deal about M.L.K. Each day, we focused on learning a new vocabulary word that helped the kids truly understand the importance of his work. Ask your child to discuss these words with you. We also watched a video about his life and learned about other important people during the civil rights movement. The kids loved learning about Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges. The kids expressed their creative sides by drawing a portrait of M.L.K. We also did a close reading about Martin Luther King Jr. over 3 days. We reread an article about his life several times in order to really understand what it said and also to answer questions that made us refer back to the text. ![]() A technology teacher from the school district has been teaching small groups of children how to create slide shows on the i-pads. The have learned how to type text, search & upload pictures from the internet, and add transitions. Pretty cool stuff. The week ended with the kids sketching & writing everything they had learned about Martin Luther King Jr.
The children wrote New Year's Resolutions this week. We discussed that a resolution is something they want to improve in their lives. ![]() It's Animal Report time!!! The children were assigned an animal to research. Each day, we focus on a different element of our reports. So far, we've looked through books to find & write down fascinating facts, created a cover page, and wrote a dedication page. It's a very exciting time in our class. At home, feel free to help your child do some research online. Print it out and have your child bring it to school!! (The kids will be writing about what their animals eat, as well as the habitat in which they live.) With Martin Luther King Jr. Day right around the corner, we have been reading & discussing the important work he accomplished in his life. His words and actions have begun to inspire our class. Ask your child what we've learned so far! WE FILLED UP OUR SECOND JAR OF BEANS!!! The kids have been working hard on following directions and the school rules. We celebrated by eating lunch together in the classroom. It doesn't get much better than that! Important Information:
