Everyone had a GREAT time on our field trip to IN-N-OUT. The restaurant staff was amazing and our parent chaperones & Mrs. Erickson were super helpful. I'm happy to say that the children were respectful, polite, & patiently waited for their food to arrive! Later that day, we wrote "Thank You" letters to the staff, letting them know how much we appreciated their kindness. Take a look at a slideshow our fabulous outing... THE SPRING PROGRAMThank you all for dressing your kids up for our big show. They all looked adorable. The class did a great job with a dance that they had learned not long ago. Below you'll find a video of the performance! Sunday is EARTH DAY! With that in mind, we spent time this week learning how to take better care of the Earth. A few weeks ago, we created a chart explaining 3 different ways to help the Earth. We also read a few books and discussed the importance of cutting apart plastic six-pack holders so animals will not be harmed from them. Friday was the best day of all... WE CLEANED UP TRASH AROUND THE SCHOOL!! Not only did we take care of the Earth, we also made our custodian's life a little easier :) Don't be surprised if your child wants to do a little extra cleaning up at home, too! THE WHITE HOUSEWe are nearing the finish line with our Statues of Liberty, thanks to our Cerritos College Aide! READER'S WORKSHOPAs we continued our work on reading strategies, the kids determined which strategies they use most often and others they need to work on more. We added another tool to our tool bag and the kids jotted down the strategy they think will help them with their reading. Ask your child and reinforce that strategy when he/she reads at home. DATAThe first graders have launched into a new unit in math - DATA! It's all about sorting, graphing, understanding how to interpret the information collected. The kids are learning how to collect data and organize it. The vocabulary can be a little tricky, but the children are really getting the hang of it, and it's FUN!!! You'll be seeing much of this in the homework. THE ART PARTY!!!After filling up our 3rd jar of beans, the kids voted and decided on having an art party. The class had a great time creating things out of clay & paper. They also had an opportunity to watercolor. Everyone had a GREAT time! Here's What's Coming Up Next...In Reader's Workshop, we have jumped into a new unit of study - READERS HAVE BIG JOBS TO DO. This week's lessons focused on being the BOSS OF YOUR READING by stopping when you notice something isn't right and trying everything you can to solve the word. The kids received a new tool to use when reading with their partners to remind them to stop if they make an error. It's called a "Stop & Go Sign." The kids practiced using this tool when I was modeling my own reading on the big screen. Ask your child how he/she can be the BOSS of his/her own reading!! Take a look at the mini lessons we did in reading this week... READ ALOUDS![]() Reading aloud to students models for children what reading should sound like. We stop during stories to discuss what is happening. The kids are learning how to have more productive book talks. This week, we read stories from Frog & Toad are Friends. We used this chart to work on our conversations. BEING SUPPORTIVE BUDDIESThe students in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade began their state testing this week. It's called the SBAC and it's quite challenging! It is taken completely on the computer over several days. In order to encourage our 5th grade buddies to do their best, our class wrote notes to cheer on their big buddies. We surprised them by delivering them personally to their class. The 5th graders were truly touched and appreciative!! Check it out... AMERICAN SYMBOLS![]() As we continue to learn about American Symbols, this week we focused on Mount Rushmore. Ask your child to share some facts we learned about this interesting symbol. The kids had fun painting their Statues of Liberty. There is still plenty more to do until we are done with this project!!! Each morning we sing songs that represent America. The kids have a copy of the lyrics. This really helps their reading skills, too!! Take a look :) Here's What's Coming Up Next...Spring Pictures were sent home this week.
