I will post a new blog every Friday to keep you up to date on what's happening in our room each week. Add a comment, if you'd like.
We are off to a great start!
This first week, we've worked on learning the routines of our classroom. The reading portion of the day is organized in the DAILY 5 structure. Check out the Daily 5 page on this site for more information.
The children are learning how to work independently and are building their stamina in both reading and writing. Take a look at the charts we created to develop productive behaviors during READ TO SELF & WORK ON WRITING.
I compared reading to shoes -
* We choose shoes based on our purpose... just like books.
* We choose shoes based on our interest ...just like books.
* We make sure we get shoes that are the right size... just like books.
I displayed several pairs of my shoes - they are fit me for different purposes & interests.
I put on a pair of my husband's shoes - maybe the right purpose & interest, but the wrong fit. Then, I had kids exchange shoes to see if they fit, served their purpose & interest.
This is a lesson I will refer back to all year, as the children learn to self select books.
You can use the term "GOOD FIT BOOK" when you go to the library or bookstore.

Our focus in writing is personal narratives - true stories about yourself. We are learning to write a story focused around a small moment and stretch it across 3 pages. Take a look at our anchor chart.
