On Monday, the kids had to ask "yes/no" questions to guess what was in the bag.
On Monday, we'll count, divide, and EAT the kisses.
THE KIDS CAN'T WAIT!!!
2018-2019 |
It's fun to shake things up once in a while... so this week we had a special math unit about Hershey's Kisses! This unit really teaches the kids that the fastest way to count big numbers is by creating groups of tens. It goes right along with our math book! So much learning happened while we were having fun!!! Take a look... On Monday, the kids had to ask "yes/no" questions to guess what was in the bag. On Tuesday, the kids used linker cubes to estimate how many kisses were in the bag. In partners they filled quart size baggies to the same level as the Hershey's Kisses bag. They kept comparing to make sure both bags had the same amount of air at the top! Next, they emptied their baggies and made ten sticks to count the contents. That's how we estimated how many kisses were in the bag. Then we counted the kisses by putting them in groups of tens. On Wednesday, the partners made two types of cylinders to determine which one would hold the most cubes. Once we found the one that held the most, we used that one to measure more kisses into our candy container. On Thursday, the partners made two types of boxes to determine which would hold more, just like we did with the cylinders. Making boxes takes focus and concentration, not an easy task. They were really proud of their creations! (All you need is a square piece of paper!) We had to spit "Day 4" into two days in order to finish. On Friday, the partners measured more cubes into their boxes to find the box that would hold the most kisses. We found that Sean's box held the most. His cylinder held the most, too!! This is how many kisses that were added to our jar over the 3 days. On Monday, we'll count, divide, and EAT the kisses. THE KIDS CAN'T WAIT!!! We are learning to write short paragraphs by using a graphic organizer called "HAMBURGER WRITING." As a class, we wrote what polar bears eat by writing a topic sentence, 3 details, and a closing sentence. Next, they copied their hamburger writing onto a paper to create a paragraph. We continued our work learning long vowel spelling patterns. Here's the vocabulary we learned over the last few weeks :) Here's What's Coming Up Next...***Our field trip to La Habra Children's Museum will be on March 16th.

This week we continued to read, write, & draw what we've been learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We've also spent time reading & discussing other important people from the civil rights movement - Rosa Parks & Ruby Bridges. On Friday, the kids used our classroom charts & posters about MLK to write information they learned over the last few weeks. Also, through a directed drawing lesson, we drew a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. The students' portraits ALWAYS turn out amazing. We will finish them next week. I'll post them when they are done!! Rainy, rainy days...Due to the rain, the kids spend most of their time in the classroom. Our music teacher was so kind to come to our room for our lesson, so that we wouldn't have to cross the campus during the downpour! The kids are learning to read music and follow different patterns. They used rhythm sticks to play the music The children continue to build their knowledge of place value by drawing tens sticks and circles to represent numbers and solve equations. Here's What's Coming Up Next...Welcome back and happy 2017! The kids were excited to return to the routines of the classroom. We spent the week reviewing our rules and practicing appropriate behavior. We had fun finding out what everyone did over the winter break by doing a "Holiday Break Friend Search." Take a look... We also made resolutions for the new year. Martin Luther King Jr. has been a big part of our studies this week. We have been reading books, watching videos, learning vocabulary, and using pictorials to gather lots of information. Below is our cognitive content dictionary. It's a tool we use to learn new vocabulary. Ask your child about the words we've been learning. In math, we have been working on different addition strategies. First we worked on "making a ten." This strategy is useful because it's easier to add when an equation has a ten in it. Then, we spent a few days learning the doubles facts. The kids make flashcards, which they took home. Also, we are learning a song to help learn the facts. Practice memorizing these with your child. Next week we will work on doubles + 1/ -1. Animal Reports are a fun way to learn to write informational text. As a class, we are doing a report on Polar Bears. Each day, we add another page to our book. Once we are done, the kids will create an animal report on an animal of their choice!!! Learning the long vowel spelling patterns is a big part of first grade. This week, we studied the long a patterns. Here's what's coming up next...PLEASE return your conference form on Tuesday, if you haven't already done so. I need to finalize the schedule and assign days & times. Thank you!!
