After discussing what we experienced, the kids recorded their learning in their science notebooks. They also cut & sorted things that make loud & soft sounds.

We had our first Class Game Time with Coach Riley this week. He will work with our class once a month to teach us new games. PlayWorks is an awesome program, which teaches kids how to get along & resolve problems through play. These social skills are essential at school & in life! Take a look at our session with Coach Riley.
In math this week, we continued to work on addition facts to 10. The kids played a game to practice on their own. They took home a copy so that they could play at home, too! On Friday, we started our work on subtraction using circle drawings. The kids LOVE music class! This week in music, Miss Quiles taught the kids to read longer lines of music by following the syllables in the names of different types of candy. In our classroom, we continued our learning by using rhythm sticks to follow different rhythms & patterns. SCIENCE... Changing Sound!![]() Building on our knowledge about vibration & sound, the science lesson this week was on how we can make sounds loud or soft. The kids explored xylophones & one- string guitars to create different volumes by either hitting or plucking hard or gently. After discussing what we experienced, the kids recorded their learning in their science notebooks. They also cut & sorted things that make loud & soft sounds. Here's What's Coming Up Next...

The kids love music class. This week, we continued to work on understanding whole & half notes by relating them to syllables. The class caught on quickly and read simple music which they played on drums. We'll continue this work in class with rhythm sticks next week!
Outdoor Science! As we continued our work with sound & vibrations, we went outside to observe different sounds we could hear from the playground. We discussed "sound sources" & "sound receivers." HELLO FALLHere's What's Coming Up Next...RETURN LIBRARY BOOKS ON WEDNESDAY NEXT WEEK (9/28) We will be visiting the library on Wednesday due to Picture Day on Thursday. Thanks for your cooperation!!! PICTURE DAY IS THURSDAY (9/29) ![]() Please complete & return this conference form on Monday. I will create a schedule and send you a note on Wednesday notifying you of your exact day & time. Thanks for your support!!! Conference Week is... October 3 - 7. Practice the above reading strategy at home. This is something we do ALL THE TIME when we read :)
With the Common Core Standards, first grade students are not only required to solve math problems, but they also need to EXPLAIN their thinking, as well. It's important that children find strategies for solving problems that they truly understand and can explain to others. In math this week, the children solved simple story problems and shared their solutions with the class. We are solving problems with circle drawings, math mountains, and writing equations. Take a look... Science - Sound & VibrationsThis week, we continued our investigation by hearing & identifying different types of sounds and how sound waves travel travel & can actually move objects. The kids used a number of objects, as well as tuning forks! Next week we will go outside and identify different outdoor sounds. ![]() The kids are learning scientific vocabulary to explain what they notice during our investigations. We continued to record data in our Science Notebooks. In order to help kids listen to themselves read, the children were introduced to out "READING TELEPHONES." They are a great tool for children to pay attention to what they read. ![]() I'm happy to say that we ended the week on a high note! The kids did a great job on Friday following our classroom rules!! Take a look at our scoreboard!!! Here's What's Coming Up Next...We had an exciting week with the introduction of our first science unit of the year: SOUND & LIGHT The focus this week was on WHAT CAUSES SOUND. The children explored sound in a variety of ways and we discovered that sound is caused by vibration. We also learned that scientists record their findings in... SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS, which we did as well. I sent home some information on what we are learning in class. Explore these concepts at home, too!!! Next week we will explore HEARING SOUNDS. In math, the children have been learning games that they can play by themselves to develop their understanding of counting & adding. Playing games is a great way to build number sense and to have a ton of fun!!! ![]() We had our first math test on Friday. We had a practice test on Thursday to prepare for Friday's test. I'll send home the results next week :) Every Friday we go to MUSIC class with Ms. Quiless. This week's lesson was on developing a steady beat, as well as learning the different types of notes: whole, half, & quarter. Music helps children in a number of ways, especially reading! They need to pay attention & track the notes with their eyes, just like we do with words when we read. Consider having your child learn to play an instrument!! We learned the fourth element of Daily 5: LISTEN TO READING Using our i-pads and i-macs, the kids listened to reading using RAZ-KIDS. Not only do they need to listen to stories using this website, they also need to answer comprehension questions to check their understanding! When using RAZ-KIDS at home, make sure to have you child answer their questions that go along with the stories. IT REALLY HELPS!!! Here's What's Coming Up Next...October 3 - October 7
Parent-Teacher Conferences October 13 McTeacher Night The children wrote down something that they want to get better at in school. We'll check back often to see if they are meeting their goals. We are also setting goals in the area of reading. At this point, I am meeting one-on-one with students to listen to their reading. Together we find a reading goal that will help them to become better readers in the near future. As time goes on, our goals will adjust based on how the students progress. I-Ready is one of the assessments we use to see how the children progress in both reading and math. We test the children 3x a year. This week the children took the first assessment to give us baseline data. I-Ready has lessons that are right at the children's level and are automatically adjusted depending on how the students perform. I-Ready is an online program, which your child will be able to access at home. Next Friday, I will send home the login information for your child to use I-Ready at home! The children were introduced to our third part of Daily 5 - READ TO SOMEONE! This tends to be a favorite because kids LOVE to work together!!! As you can see, the kids sit right next to each other, which we call EEKK - elbow, elbow, knee, knee. 5th Grade Buddies!!!!!!!!!!!!!Our class partners up with Mrs. Gardner's 5th grade students. We will meet twice a month to read with our 5th grade buddies. The first graders LOVE having a big buddy at school & the 5th graders LOVE mentoring their little buddies. Many of the 5th graders were in my class in first grade, when they were the little buddies. They are so excited to finally be the big buddy!!! Making Connections in Reading: |
