On Monday, we celebrated the end of our second writing unit with a gallery walk. The students had an opportunity to read each of their classmates "teaching" books. Our focus was on non-fiction writing. Harvest of the Month gives the children an opportunity to try healthy foods. On Wednesday, the kids tried yogurt with a rice cake, along with a pear. This week I introduced SUPER SPEED 100. In partners, the kids read through as many words as they can in 1 minute. As we continue to delve into the Common Core curriculum, the class did a close reading lesson with Mrs. Verduzco. Mrs. Verduzco is one of our district level coaches. Close reading provides students an opportunity to read a text several times in order to get a deeper understanding of what they are reading. Using the text, What Do You Do With a Tail Like This, the first reading allowed the children to circle & discuss words that they did not understand. The following readings helped the class to find key details about the animals they had read about, as well as determining the topic of the book. Discussion & conversation is vital to deepen understanding.
![]() This week we learned about different tools that measure weather. We started the week by learning about thermometers. Next, we moved onto measuring wind with the Beaufort Scale. We finished up the week by making wind vanes. We used our wind vanes outside and noticed the strength and direction of the wind. It's taken a while, but the website now has lots of photos! Please check it often. I will try to post a blog once a week and attach some photos, too.
This week, my first graders met their 5th grade buddies for the first time! We will have our 5th grade buddies all year, hopefully meeting with them 2-3 times a month. During our buddy time, the children will read together. The first graders are VERY excited!!! Below are some photos of the children reading with their buddies on Friday. Enjoy! |
