What do you want to be when you grow up?SHARED READINGEach day we choose a STAR PERSON in class. We examine his/her name carefully for vowels, consonants, # of letters, & # of syllables. Next, we ask the STAR PERSON two questions. I have the students restate what was said as I record the response and then we read the chart as a whole class. So many skills are practiced during this engaging lesson & the kids love getting some special attention. ;) Check it out... DRAWING LESSONDuring Writer's Workshop, the kids illustrate their stories. To help them add movement and dimension to their figures, we learned some different ways to draw. We did this as a directed drawing lesson. I drew & the kids copied me on their own papers. They LOVED it! MUSICOur class goes to music class with Mrs. Higgins every Wednesday. This week she focused her lesson on copying rhythm patterns correctly. Take a look... GROWTH MINDSETMATHOur math block involves starting with a routine to get our minds warmed up. We discussed different ways to make 6. Then I present a problem to be solved. The kids can use any math tools that make sense to them. Next, they put their thinking down on paper. I choose a few kids to share their strategies with the class. The best part is that the kids learn from each other and are encouraged to try on strategies for solving that might help them in future problems. Here's What's Coming Up Next...Please complete & return the pink compact form.

It's a brand new year! The beginning of the year involves learning the classroom rules and routines. With first graders, this takes a while, but they are getting it :) Our 5 classroom rules are: 1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS QUICKLY 2. RAISE YOUR HAND FOR PERMISSION TO SPEAK 3. RAISE YOUR HAND FOR PERMISSION TO LEAVE YOUR SEAT 4. MAKE SMART CHOICES 5. KEEP YOUR DEAR TEACHER HAPPY :) Ask your child to recite our rules to you. Everyone should know them!! DAILY 5 is a structure that I use in class that gives the children LOTS of time each day to work independently on reading & writing. We are working on the first two elements: **READ TO SELF **WORK ON WRITING In the next few weeks, we will learn the 3 other components: **READ TO SOMEONE **LISTEN TO READING **WORD WORK The children are learning how to build their stamina to work independently and stay focused during READ TO SELF & WORK ON WRITING. The kids are learning to choose spots around the room that help them avoid distractions. As you'll see, they get creative with finding just the right spot for them! Take a look... The kids are working on building their stamina for working independently. Take a look at how great they did during WORK ON WRITING without getting up and working quietly!! Our first reading lesson was the 2 different ways to read a book: * Read the pictures * Read the words Now we are learning how to pick "GOOD FIT" books. This lesson involved making the comparison that reading is like shoes - *You need to pick shoes/books you like *Your shoes/books meet your interests *Your shoes/books need to fit you just right *Your shoes/books might not fit your friend WRITER’S WORKSHOP FOLDERSThanks for doing an amazing job decorating your child's Writer's Workshop folder. The kids were so excited to share them with their classmates!! They are learning to take turns speaking and listen attentively. Here's What's Coming Up Next... |
