The class had a great time playing a penny toss game. The kids are noticing that the presidents we are studying are also on the money we use! Take a look...
After learning much about Lincoln & Washington, we spend a few days completing a Venn Diagram to compare & contrast these two presidents. Ask your child some of the differences and similarities of these two presidents. **Next week, the kids will complete a Venn Diagram comparing themselves to another classmate. That should be fun!! The class had a great time playing a penny toss game. The kids are noticing that the presidents we are studying are also on the money we use! Take a look... Each day, I teach the kids a different mini-lesson to help them develop as readers. One of our mini lessons focused on reading comprehension. Many kids are finding this helpful to remember what they read. Try it at home!! Another mini-lesson was on sitting back-to-back with their reading partners as they do independent reading. This helps them to focus and not be distracted as they read. It also makes transitioning to partner reading super fast and efficient :) There are lots of different ways to build numbers and solve equations. The kids love to share their strategies!! Take a look at how some of the first graders are finding their own ways to solve a story problem that is essentially multiplication!!

The kids were VERY excited about Valentine's Day! After making Valentines, we had our Valentine exchange. Take a look :) P.S. Thanks for all of the thoughtful gifts!!!! GEORGE WASHINGTONWe read many books and did a pictorial about George Washington's life. Ask your child some facts that he/she learned about Washington!! Next week, the kids will write & draw what they've learned and we will compare/contrast Lincoln & Washington! MATHThe kids are learning about the more than >, less than <, and same as = symbols. To help the kids understand, I tell them that the mouth wants to eat the greater number. We also use ten sticks & circles to represent the numbers to get a visual of which number really is greater. Use this strategy at home if your child has any confusions :) Here's What's Coming Up Next...We spent the entire week reading & learning about Abraham Lincoln. We began by thinking about questions we have about him. From there we began to read & research information that we found interesting. Check out our "I WONDER.../ WOW!" chart. I told the story of his life using a pictorial. The kids love seeing the story come to life as I use different color markers to emphasize key details about Lincoln. We spend 2 days using the pictorial and the kids return to it often to recall facts. It's an amazing tool that allows me to teach high level information in a comprehensible way for small children!! ![]() Here's our Cognitive Content Dictionary that shows key vocabulary that we focused on this week. Ask your child about these words :) At the end of the week, the kids sketched & wrote what they had learned about Abraham Lincoln. It's a great way for me to see how effective my teaching was. Ask your child what he/she learned about Lincoln!! We also drew a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. The kids never end to amaze me with their talent! Take a look at their wonderful artwork :) "ed" ENDINGSThis week we learned that the "ed" ending can make 3 different sounds, depending on the word. We started by sorting words on our pocket chart, and then the kids began to hunt for words in their own books and posting them on our chart. Ask your child to point them out when reading at home, too! MUSICThis week the kids worked on playing a rhythm pattern while singing. Take a look... One of our district coaches has done a few lessons in our class called "Number Talks." Number Talks are short lessons in which the children are given problems to solve in their heads and explain their thinking in front of the class while the teacher records their process on the board. Here's What's Coming Up Next...Monday: Abraham Lincoln's Birthday Holiday (NO SCHOOL!) Wednesday: Valentine's Day * We will have a Valentine exchange and the kids may bring Valentine cards to exchange. * The kids may bring candy to share with their friends. * NO cookies or cupcakes. Here is our class list: Monday, February 19th
Presidents' Day Holiday (NO SCHOOL) Our little ones are learning to write paragraphs!! We use a graphic organizer called "HAMBURGER WRITING" in order to structure our writing with a topic sentence, 3 details, and a closing sentence. After that, the kids copy their hamburger writing onto another paper in order to create a paragraph. We are creating these paragraphs together as we learn about Polar Bears, and later on the kids will create their own using other topics. ART ON DISPLAY!!Make sure to stop by the office and check out our amazing Martin Luther King Jr. portraits! The kids are very proud of their work!! GROUNDHOG DAY :)Over the past few days, we read books and watched videos about groundhogs. The kids predicted and graphed if they thought the groundhog would see his shadow. We found out that he did!! It looks like 6 more weeks of winter... however, it really doesn't feel like winter around here!!! MUSICMrs. Higgins worked with the kids on matching pitch and keeping a steady beat. Take a look... MATHStory problems are the key to using math in context. The kids have many different math tools available to them and it is up to them to find the ones that help to solve the problems in the most efficient ways. The kids are encouraged to show how to solve problems using more than one method and share their thinking with their classmates. This helps to develop a deeper understanding. Check it out!!
