It's been a busy week. The kids had fun creating gifts for their families. They are doing much better with helping each other and working with partners. Check out our reindeer art project! We completed our third weaving project this week. The kids needed lots of help the first time we did weaving in October. The November project was a little easier. Our December weaving was a piece of cake. Most of the kids were able to do it themselves!! The kids were super excited for our gift exchange on Friday. Thanks for everyone's participation!! The children had tons of fun opening their gifts. Take a look... ***I'd like to thank everyone for their thoughtful gifts. They are much appreciated!!

A first grade standard is for the children to know the 7 continents and the oceans of the world. Most of us know the 4 oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, & Arctic) but I learned that scientists have named the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. Review these with your child as we continue to learn the continents & oceans in class. Not only can individual children earn blue Dolphin Tickets for good behavior, the entire class can earn a BIG Dolphin Ticket when all of the children in class behave well around campus. Our class just earned 10 Big Tickets, so we celebrated by eating lunch together in the classroom. The kids had a ball! They can't wait to do it again!! We are deep into our nonfiction writing unit. I've done several mini-lessons on how to write books that teach others what you know. Here are a few of our teaching charts. ***It was so nice meeting with all of you during conference week. I truly appreciate working with you in order to educate your child! THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!! Here's what's coming up next...Thursday: Return H.W. & Reading Log
Friday: GIFT EXCHANGE!!! Minimum Day (12:45 dismissal) December 19 - January 3 is Winter Break!!! ****School resumes on January 4th One of the reading standards for first grade is the ability to distinguish fiction and nonfiction text. Our current units of study, in both reading and writing, are on nonfiction text. When reading at home, ask your child if their book is fiction or nonfiction and then ask how he/she knows. The kids sorted their books to see how many fiction & nonfiction books they had in their boxes. Many kids visited our classroom library to add nonfiction books to their boxes! We had a "Reading Party" to investigate the different kinds of text features we could find in nonfiction books. Text features are charts, graphs, bold words, photos, Table of Contents, etc. Point these out with your child when you read nonfiction books at home. In math, the kids are working on solving subtraction story problems. Being able to understand math in the context of a story problem is a really important skill. Not only are the kids required to solve the equation, but they need to show their thinking, too. This is done through math mountains, circle drawings, and the writing of equations. The kids also had fun solving equations using flashcards with a partner. A copy of the orange flashcards were sent home for further practice. ![]() On Fridays we celebrate the Star of the Week. Not only do we create a "Big Cheese" chart, but the star brings in something from home to share. The class plays "10 Questions" in order to guess what the child has brought to share. HERE'S WHAT''S COMING UP...**Parent Conferences are next week. (12/7 - 12/11) Please be on time for your conference. As you can see, I have a pretty tight schedule!! Thanks so much for your cooperation!!! There will be a BOOK FAIR in the library next week, as well. (12/7 - 12/11) Our class will visit the BOOK FAIR on THURSDAY. If you'd like your child to purchase some books, please give your child some money so spend on Thursday. ****The BOOK FAIR will also be open after school from 1:00 - 2:30. December 18th:
