This week was packed with fun activities to celebrate RED RIBBON WEEK. Take a look at all of the fun we had! Monday was CRAZY SOCK DAY. Tuesday was CRAZY HAIR DAY. Wednesday was PAJAMA DAY. Thursday was SUNGLASSES DAY. Friday was our infamous HALLOWEEN PARADE!!! Take a look at this slide show of our fun morning! There are lots of cute photos. Learning about Pumpkins! We did a CLOSE READING of an article called "Pumpkin Harvest." We read it several times over a three day period. The kids highlighted the text in order to find information in order to answer questions, just like older students do! We did a math/art lesson about WEAVING A PUMPKIN. The kids needed to weave black strips over & under in order to create a checker board pattern. It looks easier than it is! Thanks to Ms. Silva for helping us! It's always nice to have an extra hand!! Every week we select a Star of the Week from our basket of names. The star gets to sit in the "STAR CHAIR" all week, as well as help out the teacher. On Friday, the class interviews the Star Person and I record what is said on a chart. The Star Person also gets to bring something to share with the class - like "show & tell." Every child will get the opportunity to be the Star of the Week! HERE'S WHAT'S COMING UP NEXT...

This week the children continued to revise one of their Personal Narrative stories during Writer's Workshop. In order to revise the words, the kids read their piece to a partner for feedback- to make sure their writing made sense. They read their work once again to edit spelling mistakes - we only checked the words that we have posted on the Word Wall, and punctuation. On Friday, the kids sat in small groups and shared their stories with their classmates. Now the stories are hanging on our Author's Wall. In math, the kids are learning to explain their solutions to the class. Children need to be able to explain their thinking. At this point we do it orally, but as they progress through the grades, they will need to explain their solutions in writing. On Friday, we had 6 Fullerton college students volunteer their time in our classroom. They worked with each child to create a slide on the i-pad program, Keynote. The topic was BATS. The college students helped the kids type a fact that they had learned and find an image on the internet to match their sentence. The kids LOVED it!! So did the college buddies!!! In music class, the kids learned 2 Italian terms to describe music: adagio (slow) & allegro (fast.) The music teacher played different pieces and the children had to identify their speed. 5th Grade Buddies ROCK!!!Every student in our class has a 5th grade buddy in Mrs. Gardner's room. We met with our buddies on Friday for the first time. The first graders read to their buddies for 15 minutes, and then the 5th graders read to the little ones. It's a really special relationship that the kids will build over the year. We will try to get together with our buddies 2x a month. I had many of these fifth graders in my class many years ago. They are so excited to be the BIG buddies now!! Our next focus in reading will be on informational text - NONFICTION. Text features are a big part of reading informational text. This week we drew a diagram of a spider & created a chart to identify the differences between spiders & insects. Check out our work! We spent about a week working on this interactive writing piece. Everyday we added a sentence and the students recorded their work in their notebooks. Everyone in our class should be able to read the pieces that we create together. Here's What's Coming Up... Join PTA between October 26 - November 13. $7 is the membership fee. The money goes to field trips, activities, etc. PTA funds help our school in a great number of ways!!! DON'T MISS THE HALLOWEEN PARADE ON FRIDAY!!! The kids always look sooo cute!!! We spent this week learning about BATS! We read books & gathered information to expand our knowledge. First, the kids wrote & drew what they already knew about bats. And then we read & recorded interesting facts. The kids learned some cool vocabulary: nocturnal & mammal. Ask your child what these words mean. As a directed drawing lesson, the kids drew a diagram of a bat. They did an amazing job! Much of what the kids learn this year I will teach through drawing!! Have your child explain the diagram to you! We finished up the week by making a bat out of construction paper. The kids LOVED it! In writing, the kids read through all of the stories they had written and had to decide which story was their BEST. That story will be revised and edited so that it can be posted in our classroom. The first step in our revision process was to add illustrations to their illustrations. Next week, we'll add details to the text. As for their other stories, the children gave them away as presents to family & friends! This week in music class, the children are beginning to read music. The kids clap based on the number of beats in the words "bunny" & "bear." That ties to work we do in class with the number of syllables in the children's names. Pretty cool stuff! Here's what's coming up...Monday: Progress Reports go home
**Please sign & return them by Wednesday. Thursday: Return Homework & Reading Log Return Library Book (Have your child keep the library book in his/her backpack for safe keeping when it's not being read. The kids have been losing their books :( October 26 - 30: RED RIBBON WEEK (Say "NO" to drugs.) October 30: Halloween Parade A big part of first grade is being able to retell stories by including key details. We have been working on this in class. After reading a story, we discuss what happened at the beginning, middle & end. Next, the kids draw out the story using pictures. After that, they write what happened in each part. At the beginning of this process, I offer a lot of support. As time goes on, the kids will end up doing the work more independently. In math, we have been working on counting on from the greater number. Make sure to read over the parent letter about how to help your child with this at home. Our new math program has a specific way we introduce this concept to the kids. They are doing pretty well with it. Practice this at home, too! About once a month, we have a Class Game Time with our PlayWorks coach, Coach Tay. She introduces new games to the kids that they will find out on the playground during recess & lunch.
