It's fun to shake things up once in a while... so this week we had a special math unit about Hershey's Kisses! This unit really teaches the kids that the fastest way to count big numbers is by creating groups of tens. It goes right along with our math book! So much learning happened while we were having fun!!! Take a look... On Monday, the kids had to ask "yes/no" questions to guess what was in the bag. On Tuesday, the kids used linker cubes to estimate how many kisses were in the bag. In partners they filled quart size baggies to the same level as the Hershey's Kisses bag. They kept comparing to make sure both bags had the same amount of air at the top! Next, they emptied their baggies and made ten sticks to count the contents. That's how we estimated how many kisses were in the bag. Then we counted the kisses by putting them in groups of tens. On Wednesday, the partners made two types of cylinders to determine which one would hold the most cubes. Once we found the one that held the most, we used that one to measure more kisses into our candy container. On Thursday, the partners made two types of boxes to determine which would hold more, just like we did with the cylinders. Making boxes takes focus and concentration, not an easy task. They were really proud of their creations! (All you need is a square piece of paper!) We had to spit "Day 4" into two days in order to finish. On Friday, the partners measured more cubes into their boxes to find the box that would hold the most kisses. We found that Sean's box held the most. His cylinder held the most, too!! ![]() This is how many kisses that were added to our jar over the 3 days. On Monday, we'll count, divide, and EAT the kisses. THE KIDS CAN'T WAIT!!! We are learning to write short paragraphs by using a graphic organizer called "HAMBURGER WRITING." As a class, we wrote what polar bears eat by writing a topic sentence, 3 details, and a closing sentence. Next, they copied their hamburger writing onto a paper to create a paragraph. We continued our work learning long vowel spelling patterns. ![]() Here's the vocabulary we learned over the last few weeks :) Here's What's Coming Up Next...***Our field trip to La Habra Children's Museum will be on March 16th.
