To introduce this type of writing, we had a reading party. Each child was given a nonfiction book on a variety of topics. As they sat in a circle, I rang a bell and the kids passed the books to each other until all books had been viewed. Then, we had a discussion about what all of the books had in common. The kids figured out that all of the books contained information & we made a list of common elements found in nonfiction text.
We learned many of these books have:
* Table of Contents
* Diagrams
* An Index
* A Glossary
* Photographs
* Labels
*And most importantly, they teach us new information!!
